Love Your Enemy

I know I am going to get slammed for this but I just can’t help it. Should Christian’s be glad that Bin Laden is dead? Now, a secular government has acted. That’s fine. But to hear CHRISTIANS say ‘that is exactly what I would have done’ (i.e. what President Obama did) is surely wrong. I have heard believers say that they are glad that Bin Laden is dead and that they would have pulled the trigger themselves but the celebrations of his death were over the top.

You would have pulled the trigger?

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you,

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to be repaid, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, so that they may be repaid in full. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

Love must be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another. Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, pursue hospitality. Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil; consider what is good before all people. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all people. Do not avenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God’s wrath, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Rather, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing this you will be heaping burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Which part of these scriptures allow followers of Jesus to pull a trigger on anyone, even someone like Bin Laden.

Whenever I express my views to people the oft response is “Oh, so we should just let him do as he pleases with us – Britain and Europe should have just let Hitler conquer without a fight.” That is a hard question. But my response is: What would have happened to Hitler and Nazism if Europe went to their knees in prayer and cried out to God? Some (even Christians) have responded to me “That would not have been enough!”

Possibly. But Europe did not go to its knees in prayer. And today, too many in the Church are quick to reach for the gun rather than kneel in fervent prayer seeking God and his will.
