Too Much Physical Exercise Can Be Spiritually Dangerous

We are going through Paul’s first Epistle to Timothy in Sunday morning Adult Education class. We read a chapter a week and then come and discuss as a group. We did 1 Timothy 4 this week. It stuck me what paul says in v8:

Rather, train yourself in godliness, for the training of the body has a limited benefit,but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

For Paul, spiritual exercise,spiritual training is more valuable than physical exercise. Physical exercise has a limited benefit (i.e no amount of physical exercise will stop you from dying) but spiritual exercise helps NOW and in eternity.

If you are spending more time in the gym than in prayer, scripture study and meditation on the word, then there is a problem. Make sure you spend MORE time on spiritual exercise than on physical exercise. There are many people in hell who had chiseled abs and bulging biceps!!
