This Lamp Blog has just published his top ten Bible translations. I totally agree with his list. They are:

1. Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

2. New Living Translation (NLT)

3. NET Bible (New English Translation)

4. New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

5. New American Standard Bible (NASB)

6. Good News Translation (AKA Today’s English Version; GNT/TEV)

7. The Message

8. New Jerusalem Bible (NJB)

9. Revised English Bible (REB)

10. Today’s New International Version (TNIV)

Check out his reasonings for each translation HERE

  1. Hey Dave

There is more to being a good translation that just being literal – the NASB proved that because it was hard to read. The ESV is a good version – no-one denies that. But along with a number of ‘theologians’ I think it is not necessarily the overall best version. Along with accuracy you need clarity and sometimes the ESV is hard to read. Surely in todays culture we need both accuracy and clarity. The HCSB is remarkably accurate and easy to read. Just spend a few moments with your Hebrew Text and your Greek New Testament and the HCSB with some of your favorite passages and you will see it’s accuracy and clarity.

Also, read New Testament Scholar, Mark Strauss, on the ESV –

He makes a compelling argument. This is not about anti-ESV – I read the ESV regularly and have an ESV Study Bible. But I think it is too clumsy too many times and sometimes misses the meaning of the Greek idiom.

And, the ‘are you serious’ about the TNIV – yes – it’s an excellent translation which fixed alot of the NIV mistakes. It’s a shame Zondervan did not push it as hard as the NIV.

Let’s not get to that ridiculous stage whereby just because something is revered amongst the conservative evangelicals it is beyond criticism.

  2. Andy,
I hope you know me better then to know that I’m touting the party line on this one. We’ll be traveling through your town this evening with our youth leaders. We’ll honk on our way through.
