My Own Favorite Books Of 2009

Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box

While written from a secular perspective this is one of the best leadership books out there. Written in the form of a story it is challenging and inspiring.

Justification: God’s Plan & Paul’s Vision

Controversial for sure, but also a masterly and scholarly work. As one reformed theologian has said: In biblical studies, as far as evangelicals are concerned, the outstanding trend to my mind is the work of Tom Wright. I know that there are difficulties in his work, both in the content and in the manner in which he engages (or frankly fails to engage well) with friendly critics on his theological right (I think here of John Piper especially), but there is no doubt that his project is rich, thoughtful, profound, and hugely respectful of Scripture. If Reformed people end up simply dismissing him, we will do so to our own cost.

God at War: The Bible & Spiritual Conflict

Boyd’s thesis is a direct challenge to the classical-philosophical conception of God allowing or divinely ordaining a particular evil to transpire. For Boyd this is not what the biblical text supports. He says that evil is real – it is indiscriminate – it comes from Satan and evil human beings.Boyd does not shy away from scripture in this volume. He is constantly doing exegesis on scripture to frame his argument. Whether you agree with his exegesis is one thing – what is impressive is that he brings the tough passages to the table and he shows how he handles them. Boyd is never dull. And this book is an enjoyable read because of the way he has written it – even if you diametrically disagree with his thesis it is worth reading – and there is much to take away and ponder.

Deep Church: A Third Way Beyond Emerging and Traditional

Best analysis of the emerging church out there. Not just an analysis but with a way forward. Excellent book.

Incarnation: The Person and Life of Christ

Quite simply breathtaking in terms of scholarship, spirituality and passion.

Atonement: The Person and Work of Christ

See above!

Baptism: Three Views

Sinclair Ferguson’s chapter on Infant baptism is worth the cost of this book. Whether you agree with him or not it is quite simply brilliant.

The Glory of Preaching: Participating in God’s Transformation of the World

Best book on preaching that i have read and the book I have most often recommended and given away this year!
